Frequently asked questions

How often must slings be inspected under OSHA?
Every day before use, by a competent person designated by the employer, under 29 CFR 1910.184(d). Alloy steel chain slings also need a thorough periodic inspection no more than 12 months apart, with a record of the month it was done.
When must a wire rope sling be removed from service?
Under 1910.184(f)(5), when it has ten randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay or five in one strand in one lay, wear of one-third the original diameter of outside wires, kinking, crushing, bird caging or other distortion, heat damage, cracked, deformed or worn end attachments, a hook opened more than 15 percent or twisted more than 10 degrees, or corrosion of the rope or end attachments.
When must a synthetic web sling be removed from service?
Under 1910.184(i)(9), when it shows acid or caustic burns, melting or charring of any part of the surface, snags, punctures, tears or cuts, broken or worn stitches, or distortion of fittings.
Does OSHA cover synthetic round slings?
1910.184 does not set separate removal criteria for synthetic round slings. ASME B30.9 does, and the manufacturer's instructions apply. Use those for round slings.
Is OSHA the strictest standard for slings?
Not always. ASME B30.9 and the sling manufacturer can be stricter, for example by requiring removal when the identification tag is missing or unreadable. Where they differ, follow the stricter rule.
Is the result a compliance determination?
No. The tool repeats the OSHA removal criteria for the sling type you pick. The competent person inspecting the sling makes the call.
