Frequently asked questions
- When is a fire extinguisher due for hydrostatic testing?
- Under NFPA 10, every 5 years for water, water mist, AFFF and FFFP foam, carbon dioxide, wet chemical and stainless-steel dry chemical extinguishers, and every 12 years for stored-pressure dry chemical units with steel, brass or aluminium shells, cartridge-operated dry chemical, halogenated or clean agent, and dry powder units. The interval runs from the date of manufacture until the first test, then from the last test.
- Which extinguishers need the 6-year internal examination?
- Stored-pressure extinguishers on the 12-year hydrostatic cycle: dry chemical, halogenated or clean agent, and dry powder. They are emptied and examined internally every 6 years. It is not required in the year the 12-year hydrostatic test falls, because the unit is emptied for that test anyway.
- Do cartridge-operated extinguishers need an internal examination every year?
- Yes. Cartridge or cylinder operated dry chemical and dry powder extinguishers are examined internally at every annual maintenance, as well as being hydrostatically tested every 12 years.
- How long can a disposable extinguisher stay in service?
- A non-rechargeable extinguisher is removed from service no more than 12 years after its date of manufacture. It is not hydrostatically tested or refilled, but it still needs the monthly inspection and the annual maintenance until it is retired.
- Does NFPA 10-2026 change these intervals?
- The 2026 edition's headline changes concern how the monthly inspection can be met, through electronic monitoring and performance-based inspection programs approved by the AHJ, rather than the maintenance and hydrostatic intervals this calculator covers. It applies only once your state or local authority adopts it; most still enforce the 2022 edition.
- Is the result a compliance determination?
- No. It is a planning aid. Your AHJ, your insurer or the manufacturer's listed instructions can require more, and the service tag and hydro label on the unit are the record that counts. Confirm with a licensed fire extinguisher service company.
