ASME B30 crane inspection intervals: frequent, periodic, and annual explained
How the ASME B30 standards and OSHA 1910.179 divide crane inspection into frequent (daily to monthly) and periodic (1 to 12 months) tiers, what the monthly documented checks must cover, the idle-crane rules, and where slings and hooks fit.

Quick answer. US crane inspection runs on two interlocking rule sets. The ASME B30 standards (B30.2 overhead and gantry, B30.5 mobile, B30.9 slings, B30.10 hooks) divide inspection into frequent checks, daily to monthly by a competent person, and periodic inspections, every 1 to 12 months by a qualified person depending on service severity. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179 gives this the force of law for overhead and gantry cranes in general industry: each-shift visual checks, monthly documented inspections of hooks, hoist chains, and wire rope with records kept, and a periodic inspection at least annually. A crane idle for over 6 months needs both a frequent and a periodic inspection before it lifts again.
Ask three people what a "crane annual" covers and you get three answers, because the US regime spreads the requirements across a standards suite and a federal regulation. This post maps the intervals in one place.
Which standard covers which machine
- ASME B30.2: overhead and gantry cranes (top running bridge).
- ASME B30.5: mobile and locomotive cranes.
- ASME B30.9: slings.
- ASME B30.10: hooks.
- ASME B30.20: below-the-hook lifting devices (beams, spreaders, clamps).

Frequent vs periodic: the two tiers
Frequent inspection is the short-cycle look: daily to monthly, by a competent person, largely visual and functional. Operating mechanisms, air and hydraulic lines, hooks and latches, hoist chains and wire rope, limit switches. On mobile cranes this includes the operator's pre-use check each shift.
Periodic inspection is the deep one: every 1 to 12 months, by a qualified person, with the interval set by service severity. Normal service runs annually; heavy service pushes toward quarterly; severe service (high duty cycles, corrosive or hot environments) monthly to quarterly. It covers what the frequent check cannot see: deformed or cracked structural members, loose bolts, worn sheaves and drums, bearing wear, brake system parts, electrical apparatus, and load hook deformation measured against tolerance.
The severity classification is the decision that drives everything else, and it should be written down per crane with its reasoning, the same way a written scheme works elsewhere. If your entire fleet is on "annual because annual" with no service classification recorded, that is the first finding an auditor writes.
The monthly documented checks under 1910.179
For overhead and gantry cranes, OSHA names three items that need a certification record, meaning a dated, signed record identifying the specific component: hooks (deformation and cracks), hoist chains (wear, twist, stretch), and running rope. These records must exist per crane, per month it was in service. "We look at it every day" does not answer the question; the record does.
Idle cranes: the rule everyone forgets
- Idle 1 to 6 months: a frequent inspection before returning to service.
- Idle over 6 months: both a frequent and a periodic inspection before use.
- Standby cranes: periodic-tier checks on a defined schedule even while idle.
Seasonal plants and project sites fail this one most: the crane that sat out the winter lifts on day one of the season with no return-to-service inspection on file.
Slings, hooks, and below-the-hook gear
The load path below the crane follows its own B30 volumes: slings under B30.9 get a check before each use plus a periodic documented inspection, hooks under B30.10 travel with their machine's frequent and periodic tiers, and below-the-hook devices under B30.20 mirror the frequent and periodic split. Records that survive an OSHA visit
Per machine: the service severity classification and its reasoning, the frequent-check routine, monthly certification records for hooks, chains, and rope, the latest periodic inspection with findings and close-outs, and return-to-service inspections after idle periods or repairs. Per accessory: an identity and its periodic inspection record. Retrievable by asset, not by ring binder.
